BACKGROUND

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, UN-Habitat is the lead agency within the United Nations system for cities and human settlements. UN-Habitat’s operational activities focus on reducing urban poverty by improving the living environment, making local government more efficient and inclusive, and advocating for the rights of populations to participate in urban development. UN-Habitat’s activities contribute to the overall objective of the United Nations system to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development within the context and the challenges of a rapidly urbanizing world.
 

The World Urban Campaign (WUC) is a global coalition of public, private and civil society partners seeking to raise the urban agenda to a new level. Coordinated by UN-Habitat, but owned and driven by a long list of committed partners, the WUC provides the necessary environment for collaboration. The WUC seeks to raise global awareness of sustainable urbanization and to facilitate more coherent strategies and actions by development partners working at the national and local levels.

 

The WUC is part of UN-Habitat’s work programme, located within the Advocacy, Outreach and Communications Branch. The project objective is to engage a wide range of partners in a common platform to advocate on the positive role of cities in development and to elevate the urban agenda. To date more than 115 Sponsors, Lead and Associate partners are engaged in the WUC. The Campaign Consultant will provide support to the partnership engagement process under the World Urban Campaign Secretariat.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision of the Advocacy, Outreach and Communication Branch Coordinator and WUC Project Leader, the consultant will provide support to the project in the following tasks:

  1. Prepare campaign materials for dissemination, in particular, strengthening communication among WUC members using social media tools, web posts, mailings.
  2. Prepare the content and design of the monthly WUC newsletter with inputs from all WUC partners.
  3. Liaising with WUC Partners and Members in order to obtain information to prepare the above campaign materials.
  4. Update the calendar of WUC partners and related events.
  5. Assist in preparing campaign events, working closely with the AOC Events and Outreach Unit, substantive units and partner organizations.  
 

 

COMPETENCIES

Professionalism: Shows pride in work and achievements of the AOC Branch. Demonstrates professional competence and proven ability to work with Content Management systems and photo editing programs.

 

Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Listens to others, interprets messages from others and responds appropriately.  Asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest and openness in sharing information and keeping relevant staff informed.

 

Planning and organizing: Allocates appropriate amount of time for completing assignments and have ability to work under pressure. Monitors and adjusts actions as necessary and apply judgment in the context of competing deadlines.

 

Teamwork:  Works collaboratively with colleagues in other Branches and Units to achieve the Unit objectives; solicit inputs by valuing others ideas and expertise, and is willing to learn from others.

 

EDUCATION

University degree in Management and Communication or related areas. Any technical training is an asset. Knowledge and understanding of the UN system, its mandate, mechanisms and processes in general.

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

Experience in communications, program support and public relations. Familiarity with the UN-System, experience with UN-Habitat’s work and in depth knowledge of its mandate is an asset.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English and French is required.

 

OTHER SKILLS

Experience in Content Management Systems (Wordpress), Adobe Creative Suit, Software support and communications. Ability to meet deadlines and to work with minimum supervision, with efficiency, competence and integrity.

 

REMUNERATION

Payments will be based on deliverables over the consultancy period. There are set remuneration rates for consultancies. The rate is determined by functions performed and experience of the consultant. The fees will be paid as per agreement.
